Isnt Sport just a Game

After the defeat of the SA cricket team yesterday by New Zealand in a match that will go down in history as one of the most exciting ODIs ever, we as a nation have had time to reflect.

SA CricketThe emotions attached to sport in our country have always been high, our economy, family relationships, markets and personal well being seems to hang in the balance each time our national team take to a field. I too used to be tied up into this emotional game. Whenever the Springboks lost, I fell into the traditional 3 days of depression that affected my family work and personal mood.

But why do we side with any team and then base our emotions on the results of people we have very little influence over? What makes us choose one team over another and then give our heart and soul to their brand?

Is not sport a form of entertainment for our enjoyment? Do we not pay to watch it and attend games? Surely they then play for our entertainment and not for our loyalty?

See, I do not get this sport thing, where two teams take to the field and one has to lose in order for the other to win. If it is for our, the spectator’s entertainment, why not find a way to better enhance this and allow all of the players and fans to walk away thrilled by the skill and spectacle of the game? To pay to attend a game, only to leave feeling frustrated and sad, just seems wrong. Or am I getting this whole thing upside down?

Colin Hall in his course on personal energy shares about his experience when he observed a couple playing beach bats. Colin explains that this sport is one of only two games where both sides can only win if the other player also wins. Think about that for a moment.

Could this formula be implemented into the game of all sports? What about the game of life? Could we strive to only engage in dealings where we all won and no one would ever lose, but be encouraged and uplifted by the other in order to conclude a game or business deal?

Food for thought I think.

By the way, we wish the remaining team sin the Cricket World cup all the success in the last few games. May we all win together.

4 Key Words: Convergence

Entrepreneur Key wordsIn this series, we are looking at the key words that define a successful sustainable business. The fifth word is Convergence. This is defined as: When a number of seemly random event come together to open up a window of opportunity. Now you may have picked up that this if word 5 in a series called 4 Key Words. I have added this word here because it is the collective word that binds all the 4 together. We can operate in business for years and focus on any of the 4 key words and never see any sort of growth or sustainability. It requires Convergence. This is also not something that you can make happen. Sure you can leverage opportunity and market events but true convergence is when things come together to create that golden window that we need to be ready for.

Being ready for convergence is like brushing your teach constantly all day just in case a pretty girl wants to kiss you, it can drive you insane. Or it can be just having that inner confidence in what you have done that will get you through the day. I have always been an advocate of planning for the un-planable. Being ready to seize the moment; then going out to look for those moments.

Be prepared with all that you may need to jump at an opportunity. Have the template of a proposal done, have marketing material, do the costings, have business cards on you at all times. Practice your unprepared speech, learn how to greet people in different cultures, keep a tie and jacket in your car, always fill up your car when it is ¾ empty, be prepared, success could be just around the corner.

Entrepreneur Incubator, World Academy and Spice4Life take online education by storm

The reputable Entrepreneur Incubator and Academy (EI), which offers online education, has joined forces with two other top companies in a strategic partnership geared towards enhancing the online education sphere in South Africa.

With the world and everything in the day to day life constantly evolving, technology has made life easier at so many levels.

It is this quick evolution of technology that has not only led to the necessity for people to continue educating themselves in this fast-moving world, but has also made online learning a preferable option of acquiring education.

The Entrepreneur Incubator and Academy (EI), a company founded by Bruce Wade in 2010, is one of the few that offers, among other things, this incredible way of learning – online education. The aim of this micro-learning methodology is to teach the critical skills for today’s fast-moving life in an easier and accessible way.

Michelle and BruceTo enhance the already much sought after services it renders; EI recently launched a significant collaboration with two successful companies that have the same focus. The World Academy and SPICE4LIFE have joined forces with EI in a bid to present innovative learning and new approaches on how to best manage and develop online distance courses and programmes.

This incredible partnership was launched on Thursday 12 March 2015, at the EI offices in Woodstock, Cape Town.

EI’s Bruce regarded the newly formed alliance as a significant development that would lead to the services rendered by the company being augmented for the benefit of the target market. In an interview following the launch, Bruce explained how crucial it was to have formed a partnership with both the World Academy and SPICE4LIFE, which both bring into the partnership equally valuable expertise and experience in online learning.

“It is important to always look into ways to consistently enhance what we are doing so that we can not only stay relevant but also in order to be able to keep up with the constant changes in the world around us. As an online learning platform, we have always taken the lead and have not shied away from embracing new ways of doing things.

“This new partnership with the World Academy and SPICE4LIFE will certainly take us to new heights and we are looking forward to impact the online learning environment together with the two new partners,” said Bruce.

Omar and SuzanneWorld Academy is an Australia-based company that was founded by Omar Anzur, a former banker.  In his presentation during the launch, Omar explained how his move to establish World Academy was expected to ripple into people getting a platform to develop themselves further through online education.

“I founded World Academy after seeing the power of education technology to empower people around the world to learn and fulfil their potential,” said Omar.

For Omar, this is not only about making money but about making an impact in other people’s lives by making quality education easily accessible and convenient for them. The ultimate aim, Omar said, would be to see as many people as possible having access to education.

“I dream of a world where everybody can access high quality education,” he said.

Omar runs World Academy together with his wife Suzanne Clarke, an accountant, who is equally passionate about empowering and making a difference in people’s lives. Her motto in life is “Each one of us can make a difference. Together we can make a change.”

Making a difference in people’s lives is the common denominator that drives both Omar and Suzanne, and the partnership with EI has seen them being in good company as Wade shares the exact sentiments.

The couple was in South Africa on one of their many business trips, which included attending the launch in Woodstock.

The third partner in this dynamic trio of companies that are set to revolutionise the online learning experience for many South Africans, SPICE4LIFE, also brings great advantages into the picture.

SPICE4LIFE’s founder and CEO Michelle Korevaar, a marketer by trade, is passionate about connecting, informing, and inspiring women in South Africa and the rest of the continent through what she calls “edutainment”.

Her company offers entrepreneurs and communities an opportunity to have a voice and grow their online reputation. The company is not only concerned about providing a platform for online education but it also seeks to ensure that the learning occurs in an entertaining way.

The uppermost objective for Michelle is to make a difference in people’s lives, particularly in the lives of women.

“We have made it our mission not to conform to what will pay the rent, but what will leave a legacy in the hearts of the women who visited our space. The needs of the women come first,” said Michelle in her presentation.

These three companies will work together to implement unique learning opportunities brought by online education technologies. Their passion lies in the developing countries of Africa.

TeamThough they are still operating locally (in South Africa) at the moment, they are looking into expanding and spreading their business throughout the continent. In a few months’ time, they are set to expand their footprint and start similar operations in other parts of the African continent that is in need of such online learning platforms.

The expansion into Africa would provide the three companies with yet another opportunity to fulfil their objective of making a difference in people’s lives as previous research has revealed that a large number of people, particularly those in sub Saharan Africa, have limited access to opportunities for further learning.

The relationship between the three companies started when SPICE4LIFE’s Michelle, who already knew Bruce, met Omar a while ago. Omar told Michelle about e-learning, which is something that interested her and she then introduced Omar to Bruce in a small move that could mark the start of bigger things.

Given their common interests, the three business people then decided to collaborate through their companies since they all are passionate about educating people through the online route.

4 Key Words: Leverage

Entrepreneur Key wordsIn this series, we are looking at the key words that define a successful sustainable business. The forth word is Leverage. This is defined as: The power or ability to act or to influence people, events or decisions to gain higher return.

Having and using the tools to leverage has been for too long seen as a negative aspect. We see leverage done in politics to the point of blackmail. We see relationships leveraged to the point of duty and even kids on the playground using an invitation to their birthday as leverage to gain friends or a bite from other kid’s lunch.

Leverage is and should be a positive aspect of doing business. Get to know your tools, network and strengths of a relationship and then use them to build your business. But remember to always seek the win-win result or no-deal. Whenever you just use someone, it is never a positive outcome.

Leverage in a business needs to be applied to the following

  •  Products
  • People
  • Places
  • Processes
  • Personal

Leverage is also instrumental when understanding the benefits of your product or service. Wedging those benefits into the market and leveraging small cracks open to gain access. This is the key to business development, especially when starting out with a new product.

Take a look at your business today and look for the strengths and benefits you offer, then go out and use these in a positive way to gain ground in the market, this is leverage.

The leverage formula from the business board game looks like this

Leads X Conversion Rate = Customers X Transactions X Average Price = Turnover x Margin = Profits

4 Key Words: Convenience

Entrepreneur Key wordsIn this series, we are looking at the key words that define a successful sustainable business. The third word is Convenience. This is defined as: Anything that saves or simplifies work or adds to one’s ease or comfort.

It is a given that if you offer a product or service that reduces someone’s pain or frustration, it will be a hit. But yet so many people have businesses running that have customers fuming and having to tolerate poor service, crappy products and zero customer attention. Just adding a smile to the hospitality industry will put you in the top 10% of business.

Take a good look at what you do and how it is done and find ways to add convenience to your services. Remove the pain from those who pay your salary, your customers, and they will keep coming back.

If you are unsure of how to do this, ask them. A simple two question survey will give you huge insight into what you can improve:

  1. Please rate our product/service out of 10
  2. Now what would make it a 10?

The answer to the second question is where your effort needs to be focused. Implement the requests into your business that the customer will rate you as a 10 for. This is convenience and just great customer service.

4 Key Words: Collaboration

Entrepreneur Key wordsIn this series, we are looking at the key words that define a successful sustainable business. The second word is Collaboration. This is defined as: To work with one with another in a cooperative manner. We have been created to work with each other, never alone. We each have unique strengths and abilities that when united with others create compounded exponential results.

Too many small business owners think that they need to do all the work themselves. This results in long hours of frustration and often poor quality. Why do we insist on doing things that we are not equipped to do. All that results from this is us doing a poor job that makes us look bad.

A strategy I insist on is writing out lists for both our staff and clients. Two lists are critical: first define what you are good at and second, what you are bad at. Once you have these two lists, we all need to focus on doing the stuff on the good list and avoid doing anything on the bad list. When you find yourself doing something that you do poorly and get frustrated: STOP. Work out why. If there is someone you know who can do a better job, pick up the phone and call them. Collaborate is different from delegate. To delegate, the person often has very little choice in the matter. Collaborate requires cooperation, a joining together for common good and exponential results.

In your teams, partners and business structures, learn to work with each other as you complement the areas of weakness in others with your strengths. Never judge others based on their weakness, if they share this, it is an opportunity to add value to their lives, not exploit it for your own good. As we learn to work together and complement each other, our world becomes a better place, and we find value in our contribution.

4 Key Words: Innovation

Entrepreneur Key wordsIn this series, we are looking at the key words that define a successful sustainable business. The first word is Innovation. This is defined as: Something new or different product or method introduced. Innovation does not always require you to be a techno-boff and discover a new formula or algorithm. It could be you doing an everyday thing in a new way.

But how do we identify where to be innovative? Simple: Look at the pain and anger in the world, then create a solution for the people who live in that cycle of ever increasing pain. Solving everyday problems requires that you look at the solutions before you look at the problem. This is innovation, dare to be different, start your day with a clean page and begin to design and map out your next product. Do not be hemmed in by the restriction of current beliefs or technology, stretch your mind, body and soul until you have found innovation. Then share it with the rest of the world. Once again, it does not need to be a space station or solve world hunger; even the smallest things can be innovative. Paper clips, buttonhole repair kits, chewing gum disposer, coin sorter. All these are small yet great to have on hand each day to remove the pain in our lives.

Is your business in need of some rescue?

business rescue

I am an old yachtie person. Ever since I was 3 years old, I have been playing on boats of some kind. From sailing on lakes and dams to ocean racing and regattas around the world. With a huge amount of success, failure has also come many times. I have been stranded on mud banks and reefs, caught in storms, lost masts, capsized and almost sunk twice. The services of the NSRI have saved me and my fellow crew members on a number of occasions. That is why, to this day, I will always support them through fund raising and donations. You just never know when you may need them again.
Similar to yachts, all businesses at one time or another need some form of rescue. It may just be a short tow off the reef of short cash flow or a full scale rescue from sinking into oblivion. Where is your business today?
We are putting together a one day Business Rescue workshop that will put you and your business through a number of strategic assessments to help diagnose where it needs some attention to avoid failure and potential disaster. We assess all aspects of the business from staffing, job descriptions, accountability to processes, product alignment, customer services and of course finances.
Question: What aspect of business do you think causes failure above all else? We would love to hear from you.
